Sulieti Fieme'a in her home
I would constantly visit Sulieti Fieme'a Burrows at her home in New Zealand at the time I was getting to know her and her story. I was making a documentary about her and her daughter, Tui Emma Gillies. I would visit Sulieti more often. She lives closer to the city. Sometimes Tui and her family would come visit her, driving down from Northland. One time, during one of my visits, I found her weaving. She said she would weave during her free time. Sulieti grew up in Falevai, Vava'u islands in the Kingdom of Tonga. In Falevai, weaving and the art of tapa-making is part of a woman's every day. She carried the tradition with her when she moved to New Zealand. It is already part of her identity, a big chunk of who she is. Sulieti said she's incredibly lucky to be doing her art and is always ready to share it to the world and to those who are willing to listen.
